The outside of the new operating theatre container in Timor Leste, decorated by the artists of Arte MorisI know I have been neglecting our blog lately and have not been able to share with you what’s going on at Claudia K as much as I would have liked. The truth is, I am currently away from the practice and spending some time with the Fred Hollows Foundation and Fonaroman Timor Leste in Dili. I feel very privileged to be here today, because today was a very (and I mean VERY) big day for the team: the celebration of the inauguration of the temporary operating theatre and eye clinic in a converted container donated by the New Zealand Armed Services.

The Fred Hollows Foundation is doing great work here in Dili and is currently funding the construction and establishment of a more permanent home for the eye clic and operating theatre in form of a National Eye Centre complex at the Dili Hospital grounds. This project has already started and is due to be finished by 2011 or 2012. Until then, I am sure, the operating theatre container will do just nicely for the ophthalmic team to perform urgent eye surgery for the people of Timor Leste.

Anyone feeling the urge to help and contribute to the good work of the Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand, you may do so by clicking here.
