It is surprising to hear, that many people have never heard of “Office” or “Occupational” glasses. Many people, after having had a comprehensive eye test, think that reading glasses or progressive glasses are the only answers for use in an office environment. That is why we decided to address a type of lens that actually has been specifically designed for the modern office environment.
You may currently be using reading glasses in the office and are probably aware of the limitations straight reading glasses have in an office environment. They are usually good for everything inside a working distance of around 30cm to 45cm. That is everything immediately in front of you on your desk. Anything beyond that and you find yourself temptemted to take your glasses off (if you wanted to see who has just entered your office for example), or crawl halfway across your desk (in a effort to see the VDU screen at the end of your desk clearly).
Maybe you are currently wearing progressive lenses? These lenses, in theory, should give you good vision at any distance. That is true. However, the actual size of the reading portion and the part you use for intermediate distances is comparatively small and after trying to use them at work for 8 hours every day, you may find your eyes get really tired. Let’s face it, the important parts of a progressive lens are just too small to help you through a busy day in the office comfortably.
There are 2 companies in particular that have made great advances on the sector of dedicated “Office” lenses. Those companies are the German company Zeiss and the Japanese company Nikon. They discovered, that during a typical working day, the eyes change direction about 30 000 times when changing between the manuscript, keyboard and monitor for example. Moreover, the eyes also have to adjust to the different brightness and contrast!
Individually designed lenses, specifically covering such challenging working conditions can be of enormous benefit for the eyes. Optimum vision is a requirement for staying relaxed at work, while maintaining full concentration and for having more fun at work.
“Office” or “Occupational” glasses are specifically designed to cover those areas. Depending on the individual design, these lenses can cover distances from close up to around 4m away, enough to cover the average office environment.
