The short answer is: we all wear spectacles by a small Danish company called Lindberg. You want to know why? Is it because they have a fancy label on the side that is “in”, “trendy” or whatever? Is it because they are so expensive that only the rich and famous can afford them? The answer to all those questions is no. It’s because with only 1.9 grams in weight, the frames would have to be the lightest and most comfortable frames one could wear.
In 1983 Poul-Jorn Lindberg, a Danish Optician, discovered that he needed glasses himself. After a quick look around his own shop he realised there was nothing he would consider wearing himself. In his opinion the ideal spectacle frame had to be simple in design, attractive and functional. To turn this idea into realty Poul-Jorn teamed up with Hans Dissing an architect, to design a completely new and revolutionary concept. The result was the Lindberg Air Titanium and Strip Titanium frames collections.
So that was way back in the 80’s. Since then Lindberg frames have won more design awards than any other product! Although both these ranges are still available to this day (that’s what a classic design is all about – it is ageless), they have, over the years been developed further so that Lindberg frames remain leading in design functionality and style. All Lindberg frames have nose-pads and temple covers made from medical silicone, they don’t have screws, rivets or welds. Also, all frames are made to order only.
Having been the first practice to work with the Lindberg range (and for many years the only one), there are still only a few “handpicked” stockists to this day in New Zealand.
With around 50 colours, 20 temple designs and endless number of lens shapes the range is as exciting as ever. If combined with modern lens technology, Lindberg frames are most certainly the most comfortable and the lightest glasses available, even in the higher power ranges. They are suitable for progressive lenses, single vision lenses, prescription sunglasses and so on. We also carry a range especially for children, but that will be a topic for another issue.
